Until Retirement

Twenty years.

Maybe twenty-five.

At least two decades

Until I can put away my lesson plans

For good.

But 2039 seems a terribly long

Long time

Away.

I cannot do

Twenty-five more years

Of weekly professional development meetings that seem to last two days instead of two hours

Of crunching numbers

To make the data

Show that I am good at my job

Of testing (Acuity) testing (NWEA) testing (ISTEP) testing (pre-assessments) testing (post-assessments)

Still…

I love my kids

I love my subject matter

I love collaborating with other teachers.

Will the love eventually overwhelm the drudgery

As it did thirteen years ago?

About Karen Koch

I like the old-fashioned lifestyle. All this new-fangled stuff baffles me sometimes. I cherish living out in the country, raising chickens and rabbits, planting fruit trees, and enjoying a slow life filled with beautiful words and ideas. I don't always achieve a slow life. I teach middle school English and manage a little burgeoning farm with my husband, and somewhere in the midst of that, I try to find time for writing, running, knitting, reading, and playing the ukulele. And sometimes, I actually succeed.
