Socks are Handy

It’s cold out there, y’all.

In the past, when it was cold, I would wear gloves when I ran outside.  But sometimes the gloves just don’t keep my hands warm enough, especially with that weird circulatory problem I have that makes my right index finger go all numb and/or painful when it’s cold out.  I would wear mittens, but I own only one pair and they are really bulky.  Plus, I found that my thumbs still get cold in mittens.

I stole my solution from a girl I saw working a 5K I ran in.  Socks!  Just old cheap socks over my hands, and I’m toasty for good couple of miles.  Even thin socks work pretty well.  When the temperature really drops, I’ll have to pull out some thicker socks.

It works well.  I mean, running doesn’t generally require the use of opposable thumbs, after all.  Plus, I have extra socks.

About Karen Koch

I like the old-fashioned lifestyle. All this new-fangled stuff baffles me sometimes. I cherish living out in the country, raising chickens and rabbits, planting fruit trees, and enjoying a slow life filled with beautiful words and ideas. I don't always achieve a slow life. I teach middle school English and manage a little burgeoning farm with my husband, and somewhere in the midst of that, I try to find time for writing, running, knitting, reading, and playing the ukulele. And sometimes, I actually succeed.

  1. I used to wear gloves topped with mittens 🙂 The double layer seemed to do the trick.
