Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth

Today, I volunteered at the high school in town.  To help out one of the teachers, I graded some English grammar pre-tests.  She had given them to her students to see what she needed to cover with them this year.  According to these freshmen…

The contraction made from does and not is don’t.

The plural of deer is doe.

The plural of chief is chiefies. (That one at least made me laugh.)

And it is proper to say, “Them cookies are too crispy.”  (See, I would have thought to say, “Them cookies is too crispy.”)

Don’t even get me started about the punctuation or the subject-verb agreement or capitalization.

Sigh.  My mission in life is becoming clearer.

About Karen Koch

I like the old-fashioned lifestyle. All this new-fangled stuff baffles me sometimes. I cherish living out in the country, raising chickens and rabbits, planting fruit trees, and enjoying a slow life filled with beautiful words and ideas. I don't always achieve a slow life. I teach middle school English and manage a little burgeoning farm with my husband, and somewhere in the midst of that, I try to find time for writing, running, knitting, reading, and playing the ukulele. And sometimes, I actually succeed.
